The Games

First round (Group G):

  • Togo vs France - 23 June, 2000 BST, Cologne
  • Factoids

How they got there: Entered qualifying as underdogs and overcame a poor start to finish top of their group, which included Senegal, Mali and Zambia.

Qualifying star: Emmanuel Adebayor was the top scorer in the African section of qualifying. He boasts very quick feet and is the scorer of some sublime goals.

Manager: Nigerian coach Stephen Keshi took over after a home loss to Zambia in 2005 and led them to Germany. However, after a poor performance at the African Nations Cup, Keshi was replaced by German Otto Pfister.

Captain: Jean-Paul Abalo Dosseh is the veteran of the team and the backbone of their defence.

Stars of the team: The 22-year-old Adebayor, who joined Arsenal from AS Monaco in the January transfer window, has the sort of pace and ability that could provide trouble for any defence.

World Cup history: This will be their first appearance in the finals. Togo has been one of the whipping boys in African football with a reputation for the occasional giant killing.

Strengths: They have a very young and talented squad with plenty of pace up front. Goalkeeper Kossi Agassa is also highly rated, earning the nickname 'Magic Hands'.

Weaknesses: Togo have been known to be very slow starters in games. While they were able to recover against African opponents in qualifying it will be harder to bounce back in Germany and the squad lack big-match experience.

Did you know? Togo was a German colony until the First World War.
